At
this time of year my heart goes out to those taking entrance examinations. While
talking recently to some high school students I realized again the
"good" thing about these exams. It is often said that Japan is an
examination "hell" and that getting into university in America, for
example, is far easier because you don't have to take a test. Well, that isn't
exactly true. We do have an "entrance" examination, but each college
has their own requirements about the scores needed. In addition, the better
universities all demand good high school grades, and plenty of extra-curricular
activities at school and volunteer work or at least part time work experience in
society, plus glowing recommendations from teachers and other adults who know
the student well.

.Just
planning and gathering all the information takes many hours. After I had
explained what was necessary for entering college in America, one of my students
said, "All we have to do is study for one examination. Maybe that is easier
after all." I hope these words give encouragement to those who are trying
so hard to make the grade. Japan is an examination "heaven!" Believe
that and がんばれ!
