In January, Ehime University`s Calligraphy Club had an exhibition of their work at the Prefectural Museum. Two rooms were used in the display. The first room held reproductions of Ancient Chinese and Japanese masterworks showing the origin and rich history of the craft. I was amazed to discover that many of these masterworks were originally carved in stone! The second room housed the work of the students, and it was fine work indeed. I enjoyed an experimental piece that used gold along with the traditional black ink to convey the kanji of silence.

Most impressive was the work of a fourth year student named Ms.Noriko
Matsuki. The beauty of the technique was evident even to a novice like me. Her comment book was filled with words such as "brilliant" and "dynamic". As I stood alone in front of the massive panels, a man approached and commented that the work was truly remarkable. So remarkable, he said, that he had been compelled to return to gaze at it a second time!
