Ever
since I watched Hayao Miyazaki’s sad, sad Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru
no Haka) I’ve wanted to see fireflies. I’ve wanted to catch one and hold
it in my hand, just like Setsuko did. There seems to be something magical about
it and I had never seen one. It’s like free fireworks – a present from
nature.In
Holland
we don’t have any fireflies. The only time I saw something similar like that
was in
Thailand
. At night I was walking by the sea and in the water there were tiny little
creatures (I can’t remember the name), giving light in the dark. I went in the
water and when I came out again they were still on my body, glowing in the
dark.
When it was the season to see the fireflies in
Japan
, I tried to watch them many times. My quest started in
Dogo
Park
– someone told me they were there – but I couldn’t see them at
all.

Then,
I begged my friend to take me to the mountains in her car, so that I could see
the fireflies. We drove for an hour to a mountain near Iyo city where she
remembered there were many fireflies before. But when we got there, only 3
fireflies were left – I guess the season was over already… After that I
tried to go to Kuma town, but again it was too late. So to me, fireflies will
always stay a mystery. But somehow that makes them more magical to me.
