There
is a children’s story written in 1930 called, “The Little Engine That
Could.” It was written to inspire people to never give up at the time of the
Great Depression. The little steam engine in the story kept repeating, “I
think I can, I think I can!” For my post-Depression, post-War generation the
story took on an interpretation that is now included in Positive Thinking or
Imaging techniques. I was told that if I really believed I could do something,
then I probably could and would. “Success is determined in your own mind,”
it was said. But, it’s true in reverse as well. I have been working a lot
lately with very young children who have no trouble at all understanding what I
say in English, though I talk naturally with them and make few allowances for
their young age. They respond naturally and seldom struggle or give up. They keep
trying until they get it right and 99.99% of the time they DO get it right! They
believe they can.

On
the other hand, I have students who are about 9 or 10 years old who continually
shout, “わからん!”
Because their mind-set is one of “I can’t possibly understand because this
is English and not Japanese,” they give up easily. And you know what? They
cannot understand and with that mindset they never will. Like many adults,
too, they have determined a negative outcome for themselves. It’s sad because
the opposite attitude would most certainly have the opposite effect. It is all
in what you determine to do yourself. My pre-school wunderkind prove this to
me every single day.
