I went to a soccer game in
Oita
on April 1st. Oita
Trinita played the Urawa Red Diamonds. It
was the first professional soccer game that I’ve ever been to.
Going to see any live sports game is always more exciting than watching
it on TV. However, soccer fans tend
to create the best atmosphere at games. The
atmosphere of the crowd at this particular game was very enthusiastic.
About 80 percent of the seats were occupied by
Oita
fans with blue shirts. The
remainder of the seats had Urawa Red supporters.
Even though the
Urawa
fans were greatly outnumbered, their cheering rivalled that of the
Oita
fans. The opposing fans took turns
singing special chants. Each team had its own. Some fans had even brought drums
with them, and they beat out a rhythm for others to follow. Many others brought
flags and they waved them excitedly during play.

The
game itself was quite exciting.
Oita
scored in the last minute of play to tie up the game 2-2.
However, one of the perks of going to a live game is that when there is a
lull in play, you can always observe the crowd.
Even if the entire game is boring or you’re watching a sport that you
don’t especially enjoy, you can usually find something interesting in the
crowd to watch. My favourite part of
crowd watching that game was just after half-time.
Most of the spectators had acquired balloons, and then released all of
them at the same time.
