Growing up, my house was like a zoo. No
matter which room you went to there was always an animal there. At one
point, we had 20 cats, four dogs, two snakes, 20 rabbits, two birds, two rats,
four lizards, a hamster, and even a millipede! It never occurred to me
that other
families weren't like mine. After visiting my friends' houses I soon
realized that most families had at most two or three pets. How did we get
so many animals? For starters, my mother loved animals. She bought
the hamster, lizards, millipede, birds, dogs, 4 cats and 2rabbits. When we
bought the rabbits, the pet store told us they were both male.

Twenty baby rabbits later we
realized that one was
actually female! We had cats that lived with us in the house, and cats
that lived outside. We always left a lot of food in big bins for the
outside cats and neighborhood strays would come and eat it. We liked to
say that the stray cats had "adopted" us and before we knew it we had
20 cats! I don't think I will have so many animals in my house in the
future. However, shibaken are awfully cute...
