Back home we have an expression “ Treat
others the way you’d like others to treat you.” This is the Golden Rule. My
mother had always taught me to be courteous to other people. For example, I
often open the door for someone walking behind me. No one appreciates having a
door slam in your face, so it takes little effort to open the door for someone
else. I’ve done this numerous times in Japan, and I mostly get surprised looks
with a ”“sumimasen”
afterwards. I know they’re thankful, and that’s why I continue to open doors
for other people. There are many things we could do to spread the feeling of
“Good Will.” One things we could do is to offer our train/bus seat to an
elderly person, a pregnant woman or someone with a busted leg for that matter.

If you’re riding the Shinkansen, stow your
bags away, and keep the seats next to you free. A few weeks ago, I was on the
train to Imabari, and I noticed a few people who had put their bags in the seats
next to them. There were several people who had to sit down on the floor because
of the lack of seats. I’m not shy, so I asked somebody politely to make room
for me to sit down. Either move it or lose it. So, let’s try using the
“Golden Rule” to make the world a better place.
