One of the things generally believed to be
true by both those living outside of Japan and Japanese people themselves is
that Japan is a safe country to live in. For
the most part I have found this to be true, but recently I was the victim in a
situation that has tainted my image just a little.
My girlfriend and I went to the supermarket to buy some food spending a
considerable time to do so. After we
had finished our shopping we went to Tsutaya to get a DVD and unanimously
decided to leave our groceries in the front basket of my bike – something
that we have done in the past and not thought much of.
We went in to get the DVD, not spending too much time and on our return
discovered that all of our food had been taken.
We were shocked and a little in disbelief, but in retrospect I think that
it was not a smart thing to have done in the first place!

I guess
that there was a time when one could do what we did and get away with it, but
times have changed and the fact remains that the world, no matter where we live
is made up of good people and those with intentions of the worse kind. Anyway,
I hope that whoever took our food had a good meal!
In New Zealand it would never be a good idea to leave any possession in a
public place as the chance of it being taken is very high, if not a sure thing.
On the whole I feel safer here than in New Zealand even though my country has a
good reputation in this area. I
guess that the lesson I have learned from this recent experience is simply to be
overly careful and not rely on stereotypes and hearsay.
Here’s to a safe Japan!
